Spring is only a few months away, and if you\u2019re wondering how to plant in a way that genuinely helps pollinators, you\u2019re already on the right track. Nectar and pollen plants are food<\/strong>, and by planting with purpose you can protect vital links in ecosystems, whether you\u2019re in the countryside or right in the middle of a town.<\/p>\n

Here are a few easy ways to get started (or level up what you already do).<\/p>\n

If you only adopt one idea, make it this one.<\/p>\n

3 \u00d7 3 \u00d7 3<\/strong> means:<\/p>\n

  • Choose 3 native plant species<\/strong> for spring<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • Choose 3 native plant species<\/strong> for summer<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • Choose 3 native plant species<\/strong> for autumn<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    That\u2019s 9 species<\/strong> in total.<\/p>\n

      \n
    • Then plant 3 of each species<\/strong> (so you\u2019re not relying on single plants)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      That gives you 27 plants<\/strong> that provide food across the whole growing season. A reliable \u201cpollinator menu\u201d<\/strong> from spring through to autumn.<\/p>\n

      If you\u2019ve got more space, just scale it up: same plan, more repeats.<\/p>\n

      No space? No problem. (Half a square metre can still matter)<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

      If you\u2019re working with a small area, don\u2019t write it off. Research in the Netherlands found that even very small garden plots (around half a square metre)<\/strong> can support large numbers of insects, and the secret wasn\u2019t size\u2026 It was vegetation density. <\/strong><\/p>\n

      Quick small-space wins:<\/p>\n

      • Pack planters with layers (tall + medium + trailing)<\/strong><\/li>\n
      • Use tubs, pots, and window boxes<\/strong><\/li>\n
      • Don\u2019t forget balconies, patios, courtyards,<\/strong>\u00a0even a flat roof can work (with safe access)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        A single, well-planted window box can feed passing insects like a roadside caf\u00e9.<\/p>\n

        Don\u2019t forget the night shift (moths are pollinators too)<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

        A lot of planting schemes cater to daytime visitors only \u2014 but night-flying insects need food as well.<\/p>\n

        Try adding a few plants that flower (or scent strongly) in the evening and at night. They\u2019re brilliant for night-time biodiversity and they make outdoor areas feel magical for guests eating or drinking outside.<\/p>\n

            Night-scented flowers are seriously underrated \u2014 and incredibly useful.<\/p>\n

            Embrace \u201cweeds\u201d (aka: caterpillar nurseries)<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

            This one feels counterintuitive\u2026 but it works.<\/p>\n

            Nettles<\/strong>, for example, are powerhouse plants for wildlife. A pot of nettles tucked into a planting scheme can support caterpillars of butterflies like:<\/p>\n

            • Peacock<\/li>\n
            • Red Admiral<\/li>\n
            • Comma<\/li>\n
            • Small Tortoiseshell<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

              They\u2019re also loved by bumblebees, and their seedheads can feed birds later in the year.<\/p>\n

              In short: a few \u201cmessy\u201d plants can make your whole space more alive.<\/p>\n

              These are simple pointers, but they add up. Insects are in serious decline \u2014 in the UK and worldwide \u2014 and planting for nectar and pollen is one of the easiest, most visible ways to help.<\/p>\n
